Using worst-case assumptions, such as all microorganisms in the intestine being transformation competent, in a person consuming fresh tomatoes at the 90th percentile level (i.e. eating more tomatoes than 89% of the population), the transformation frequency of the intestinal microorganisms with the nptII gene will be 3 × 10−15 transformants per day (Calgene, 1990). This transformation frequency is five orders of magnitude lower than the frequency of mutation to kanamycin resistance per bacterial replication (Anon, 1998). Therefore, under worst-case conditions there would be, at most, one kanamycin-resistant transformant per day added to 300,000 acquiring resistance during a single replication cycle. Last, but non the least, in evaluating the effects of antibiotic resistance on human health, one should consider the role of the diet. At a conservative estimate human ingestion of kanamycin-resistant bacteria is 1.2 million daily (Flavell et al., 1992).
